Self-Doubt: Managing your Inner Critic

Why do we doubt ourselves? We can conceive what we believe is a brilliant idea, yet that creeping shadow of doubt still finds a way in. Where does this come from, and why does it happen? In my opinion, it stems from one word: perfectionism. We have all heard that perfectionism is the “thief of joy,” and it truly is. The trap of perfectionism is the belief that every single detail must be flawless before we can move forward but that simply isn’t the case. As with any endeavor, there is a learning curve. You have to leave room for error, because making and correcting mistakes is exactly how you improve. After all, practice doesn’t make “perfect”; it makes progress.

So, the next time you catch yourself saying, “Ugh, this isn’t good enough,” remember that even your favorite artists have had hiccups. Those mishaps are actually what make you relatable. It is comforting for others to know they aren’t the only ones putting themselves out there and making less-than-favorable decisions. You can always bounce back and we all know everyone loves a great success story. That is exactly where you are headed.
